July 15, 2022

On 28 June, the “Silk Road · Dream Chasing” social practice team in 2022 of CCNU launched a two-week summer camp at the nine-year school in Baicheng County, in Xinjiang province, with the teams members being divided into three teams: the Kunpeng class, Boya class and Zhuimeng class. During the short two-day camp, the volunteers of the “Silk Road · Dream Chasing” team gave the children a variety of cultural quality courses and interesting group uniting activities.

The Kunpeng class consisted of 29 students from Grade 1 to Grade 3. The class name “Kunpeng” was decided by the teachers and students together, which was taken from Zhuangzi's “Journey to Freedom”, denoting the ambition of the younger students. The team first organized two quality lessons: “Chasing Dreams: Career Awareness” and “Where Are We: Understanding Geography”, not only providing the students with a rich and varied introduction to their careers and helping them to sort out the right ideals, but also introducing them to a wide range of geographical knowledge and led the children to the beautiful scenery of our country. As for the lessons for uniting groups, the team played educational games with students. For instance, guessing the person across the flag, talent show and describing and guessing. Through various games, children's self-confidence could be developed and their Mandarin expression skills could be enhanced.

The Boya class was comprised of 45 students from Grade 4 to Grade 5, and the class name “Boya” echoes the spirits of CCNU: “Loyalty, liberalism, simplicity and perseverance”. They were given the opportunity by the practice team to learn about “Where I come from, go to my hometown” and “Career awareness: What do I want to do? What else can I do?” “Protecting animals is everyone's responsibility” and other quality courses to broaden students' horizons, clarify their ideals and beliefs, and enhance their sense of responsibility. On the first day of the camp, a series of mental health activities were also organized, such as “...... is great” activity, and a word-guessing competition. In the “...... is great” activity, students were required to make sentences using the word “great” and actively expressing “It's great that the country is getting richer and stronger”, “It's great that technology is developing more and more rapidly” and “It's great that I can attend this camp” and other internal feelings. During the “Guess the Words” activity, the students participated enthusiastically, achieving the fun purpose of the camp, which was to let the students learn through playing and playing through learning. Through the two days of activities, the volunteers and the children bonded more closely and built up a strong relationship quickly.

The Zhuimeng(chasing dreams) class consisted of 29 students from Grade 7 to Grade 8. During their first meeting with the children, the team members carefully asked each student about their dreams and finally decided to use “Chasing Dreams” as the class name to encourage the children to pursue their dreams. According to the children's dreams, several teachers planned different themes for the class. Muyashar told the students about the glorious deeds of the heroes of the garrison, and the students were deeply touched by them; Mu Jinxuan, taking the children's dream of being an astronaut as the starting point, introduced the brilliant achievements of China's space industry in turn and built models for students through detailed and specific images of astronauts. During the activity sessions, the volunteers led the students in activities such as idiom solitaire and picture descriptions to improve the children's recognition and language skills.

According to statistics, as of June 29, “Silk Road · Dream Chasing” social practice activity of CCNU has started for more than two days, with a total of 32 lessons, a total teaching time of more than 660 minutes, serving 103 students in Baicheng County, Xinjiang province. The lessons are mainly divided into two categories: quality lessons and activity lessons, with innovative teaching concepts and rich teaching methods, which have been well received by local teachers and students, and praised and promoted on the public website of Baicheng County. In the future, the team will also bring more targeted summer camp activities for the children, contributing to and expanding their horizons and enriching the summer life of students in Yatuer Township of Baicheng County!
