On the afternoon of April 15, the initial “ask truth” meeting was successfully held in room 9002, Nanhu Complex, to cultivate intellectuals. Professor Li Xia, mentor delegate Xu Fang, and postgraduate counselor Liao Wei were invited to share in this meeting with the theme of “mutual promotion between positive psychological construction and harmony leading into the study”. Zeng Yan, the deputy secretary of the Party Committee of the school, hosted the meeting.

Liao gave a detailed introduction to the basis of teaching, as well as illustrated that an inquiry suggested the harmonious relationship between students and teachers is vital to promoting students’ mental health. He suggested that teachers should be inclusive to the miscellaneous assortment of students’ choices and be a mentor to give love, care and kindness.

Xu reflected on her own journey in operating positive psychological construction, and also came up with some knotty problems. She presented that the mentor should feel sympathy for what happened in the past for this student, and only from doing this, the student could be energized and seek for others’ help, rather than dwell on the disappointment.

Yu cured the problem by two angles of explaining the mindset and by exploring the relationship between psychology and behaviors. She then introduced a range of causes resulting in psychological problems and how we can identify them. She pointed out that a harmonious relationship between mentors and students could be a support and a crucial help, which mattered. She also stated that mentors were supposed to balance care and regulation, do not impose too much on normal problems, and play an active part in seeking help.

In the end, Jie Hui, deputy of the Party Committee of the school extended again his appreciation for the long-term support. He pointed out that the Code of Conduct for the Guidance of Graduate Tutors defined postgraduate mentors were the first responsible person and a harmonious relationship between teachers and students is indispensable. He emphasized that harmonious relationship is the key to the growth of students, so every mentor had the responsibility to care for students’ living conditions, and psychological activities.

The mentors are the first persons in postgraduate cultivation. Thus, they are not much scientific educators as guides in cultivation. This discussion was aimed at how we could form such a harmonious relationship together and how we could stand firmly on the line of protecting students’ mental health.
