The Luncheon Face to Face with Professors was Held Successfully in the School of Mathematics and Statistics 数统学院“我与教授面对面”新生教授午餐会专场活动顺利举行

December 12, 2020

At noon on Nov. 30, in order to help the students of the class of 2020 to develop all-roundedly in their studies and life and to promote the communication between students and teachers, the School of Mathematics and Statistics (hereinafter referred to as SMS) held a luncheon meeting with professors in the lecture hall of No. 6 Building. Mr. Liu Hongwei and Mr. Zheng Gaofeng, vice deans of SMS, Mr. Tian Jun, deputy secretary of the Party Committee, Prof. Li Bo, tutors of all undergraduate years and representatives of the class of 2020 attended the luncheon. The event was hosted by Wu Jing, the tutor of the class of 2020.

Before the event began, Wu Jing introduced the background and significance of the luncheon, and the basic information of the Class of 2020 in SMS briefly.

The event started with questions from the student representatives of each major. The student representatives asked the teachers for insights on their major studies, development plans, classroom construction and other issues. First of all, Lv Libing, a gratis pedagogical student, asked Liu Hongwei about the postgraduate examination of gratis pedagogical students. Liu Hongwei said that gratis pedagogical students can apply for on-the-job postgraduate study one year after graduation and complete the postgraduate courses online. For these students, this policy provides them with a platform to improve their competitiveness, and allows them to have a bigger development platform and broader employment prospects in the future.

Hu Ruiqi, a student from the intersection class of mathematics and economics, also asked the professor about the problem of postgraduate examinations and postgraduate recommendation. Liu Hongwei said, "Many schools hope to recruit talents in mathematics and economics, and the future development prospects of mathematics and economics are better. This shows that the work of mathematics and economics graduates is irreplaceable, but it also requires students to constantly improve themselves and expand their own horizons.” Zheng Gaofeng also added, "The study pressure of mathematics and economics classes is greater, so if you want to go to attend the postgraduate examination, you need to be fully prepared, work hard to overcome difficulties and make long-term plans."

In addition to their major studies, the student representatives also asked something else. Student representative Xianwen Zhan asked Tian Jun questions about how to do class construction. Tian Jun said, "Class activities should consider the target audience and find a suitable way for the class to participate in. Class leaders should also take advice from their audiences and be brave enough to try to carry out many types of class activities, so as to improve class cohesion." Student representatives also raised questions about personal skill development.

What’s more, the professors also shared their insights on academic and career planning for pedagogical students. In order to find better jobs, pedagogical students should focus on professional studies, have a clear and thorough understanding of high school knowledge through university training, and enhance their creativity. In their spare time, they can also learn something about high school competitions to expand their skills in this area. Zheng Gaofeng also said, "There is no fixed way to teach, and pedagogical students' skills can be cultivated in the course of work, and enhance their ability to put themselves in the students' shoes." After the event, Tian Jun also gave some advice to the freshmen. Students should focus on their own professional learning, actively seek help from teachers and classmates if they have any doubt, and take part in competitions and other activities in their spare time to discover their interests and future development direction.

This event brought professors and students closer together, created a sense of belonging to the college for freshmen, as well as good atmosphere for discussion. New student representative Wu Yuanhao said, “Through this activity, I understood my responsibility as a pedagogical student. In the future, we should continue to restrain ourselves and improve our abilities."
